Sustainable reinforcing steel for U5 in Hamburg
With the U5 underground line, the HOCHBAHN is building one of the most modern and climate-friendly underground lines in Hamburg in order to connect important locations such as the university, UKE and the arenas. For the first time, CO2 emissions will be made the main evaluation criterion for construction, taking into account the entire supply chain. This is part of a comprehensive sustainability strategy of HOCHBAHN U5 Projekt GmbH, according to which 70% of conventional CO₂ emissions will be reduced during the construction of the U5. On a route of around 24 kilometers, the U5 is to run emission-free and with 100 percent green green electricity from 2040.
SÜLZLE Stahlpartner is setting new standards in the sustainable construction industry with the supply of CO₂-reduced reinforcing steel for this major project. On behalf of the U5 consortium, consisting of Ed. Züblin AG and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG, SÜLZLE Stahlpartner is supplying steel for Lot 2 with a CO₂ footprint of less than 400 kg CO₂e per tonne and has thus fallen well short of the original target of <500 kg CO₂e per tonne of steel one year earlier than planned. This project impressively shows how sustainable construction projects can be realized and underlines the competence of SÜLZLE Stahlpartner as a reliable partner in the field of environmentally friendly construction. This is also confirmed by TÜV Süd after auditing the process landscape and validating the calculation methodology.
The first construction work for Lot 2 started in 2024 and initially includes the diaphragm wall work for the construction of the two new Bramfeld and Barmbek Nord stops, as well as various emergency exits. For this mobility project, SÜLZLE Stahlpartner in Seelze has received a total of orders for the diaphragm walls of the subway line for lots 1.1, 1.2 and 2. These are the two largest diaphragm wall orders in the history of SÜLZLE Stahlpartner. In order to master this challenge, large investments were made in the existing production and this has now been expanded to over 5000 square meters. Lots 1.1 and 1.2 will be supplied from August 2023 to mid-2025, Lot 2 will run until mid-2027.
The SÜLZLE sustainability team has worked intensively on the development of CO₂-reduced reinforcing steel in recent years and was able to convince in this project. Equally important for the success of the project is the commitment of the SÜLZLE Stahlpartner team on site in Seelze, without whose dedicated work the realization of this demanding order would not be possible.
