CLIMATE-FRIENDLY U5 FOR HAMBURG

Largest diaphragm wall contract in the history of SÜLZLE Stahlpartner

With the U-Bahn line U5, HOCHBAHN is building one of the most modern and climate-friendly subway lines in Hamburg, connecting key locations such as the university, UKE, and the arenas. For the first time, CO2 emissions will be a key evaluation criterion in construction, taking the entire supply chain into account. Together with industrial partners, CO2 emissions are set to be reduced by 70 percent. The U5 is planned to operate emissions-free and with 100 percent green electricity over its approximately 24 kilometers of track starting in 2040. For the realization of the first construction phase of U5, two joint ventures (ARGE) consisting of Ed. Züblin AG and Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG were awarded the contracts.

The first construction work for Lot 2 started in 2024, initially focusing on the diaphragm wall work for the construction of the two new stations, Bramfeld and Barmbek Nord. SÜLZLE Stahlpartner in Seelze has received contracts for the diaphragm walls of the U-Bahn line for Lots 1.1, 1.2, and 2. These are the two largest diaphragm wall contracts in the history of SÜLZLE Stahlpartner. The deliveries for Lots 1.1 and 1.2 have been ongoing since August 2023 and will continue until the end of 2024. For Lot 2, only reinforcement steel will be used, which has a lower carbon footprint than 500 kg CO2-eq per ton of steel. The SÜLZLE sustainability team has worked on this topic over the past few years and was able to make use of CO2-reduced reinforcement steel for this project.
